Looking beyond the Hollywood

Many people like to watch the Hollywood movies because they have the fast pace which makes you feel excited, and they have abundant money to have good effects of the movie. However, they are still many other good movie around us. I selected these movie because they don't follow the principles of Hollywood.

Many of these movie didn't be produced by Americans, so many of these movie actor don't speak English. Even though the leading character speak English, even more than one languages, they often use their special sight to look at and realize the foreign culture.

The main language speaking in the movie:
Diarios de Motocicleta: Spanish
Joyeux Noel: English, French, German
Ashita no Kioku: Japanese
Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru: Japanese
August Rush: English
Ji Jie Hao: Chinese
Ting Shuo: Chinese , Sigh Language
Hotel Rwanda: English
The Childrem from Huang Shi: English, Chinese, Japanese

They are six movies are adapted from real stories:
Diarios de Motocicleta (from Che Guevara, a revolutionist of Cuba)
Joyeux Noel (a true event in WWI)
Ashita no Kioku (many stories from the patients)
Ji Jie Hao: Chinese (a battle of China Civil War )
Hotel Rwanda: English (a genocide in Rwanda)
The Childrem from Huang Shi: (from the story of George Hogg)

I can see the different value in different movie from various countries. In a age of global villages, seeing the things from different aspects is critical important. Moreover, we can cultivate the sympathetic feeling through we learn the world. Therefore, I encouraged these movie for you to watch.

The Children of Huang Shi

George Hogg is a young British journalist from England. In 1938, during the early days of Japanese occupation of China, he sneaks into Nanjing, China by pretending to be Red Cross aid worker. Hogg is capture by the Japanese while photographing them committing atrocities and is about to be executed when Chen Hansheng (陳漢生), a Chinese communist resistance fighter, saves him.
Overwhelmed by shock, he inadvertently reveals their presence. A fierfight ensues, and Hogg is wounded. While convalescing, he is sent to an orphanage with 60 boys in Huangshi(黃石) to help Lee Pearson, the American nurse who runs it.

A Lee's insistence, Hogg helped her to convince the boys that the treatment of lice by flea powder does not hurt. Lee's demonstration of the treatment on a naked Hogg in the middle of the courtyard manages to convince the boys and they all promptly accept treatment. Lee leaves for two months, and Hogg reluctantly stays behind so as not to leave the boys abandoned. Hogg gains the boy's respect by reparing the lighting, being their teacher, and getting food for them.

Fleeing from the nationalists (國民黨) who want to conscript the boys into their army to fight the Japanese, they make a three-month journey across the snow-bound Liu Pan Shan(六盤山) mountains to safety on the edge of the Mongolian desert(戈壁沙漠), the first 900 km on foot.

.
To their relief, for the last part of the journey they are supplied with four trucks. At the destination they are offered with a building that they turn into a new orphanage. In 1945 Hogg died of tetanus. This was foreshadowed by Lee, when she had described the horrors of the disease to him earlier.

During the severe war against Japanese, there were many foreigners chose to stay with these refugees. However, most of them were forgotten by the public. But I think these brave people would not care that how many people will remember them, because their purpose is to save the life and help the life of these people on the land.

Hotel Rwanda

Hotel Rwanda is based on the real life events in 1994 Rwanda. The film started as a hotelier, Paul, who attempted to save his fellow citizens from the ravages of the geocides. The film, which had been called an African Schindler's List, documents Paul's acts to save the lives of his family and more than one thousand other refugees, by providing them shelters in the Hotel des Mille Colliness. Hotel Rwanda explores genocide, political corruption and repercussions of violence.

Tensions between Hutu and Tutsi peoples lead to a war in the African country of Rwanda, where corruption and bribes are routines. Paul, the manager of a hotel, is Hutu but his wife Tatiana is Tutsi. His marriage is a source of racial conflict.

In the whole story, Paul must diver the Hutu soldiers, care for the refugees, be a source of strength to his family. The UN Peacekeeping forces, led by Colonel Oliver, are unable to take assertive action against genocide since they are forbidden to intervene in the genocide.

This movie makes me think of the relationship between people and their country. Not only in Rwanda but also in Taiwan, two people who don't know each other may fight with each other because they belong to different political party. However, if we don't know another's ideology, we can make firends together. It's very necessary that we have to tolerate those who are not familiar with us, because everyone is different, and we should respect each other.

Ting Shuo/ Hear Me

Yang Yang(秧秧) wanted to help her elder sister, Siao Peng(小朋) to win the champion in Deaflympics, so she cheered up for her sister on the side of the swimminf pool every day. Tian Kuo(天闊) delivered lunch boxes to the selected contestants every day. He saw that Yang Yang talked to Siao Peng with sign gesture, so he also talked to Yang Yang with sigh gesture, and even asked her for MSN address.

To make the chances of meeting her, Tian Kuo sold lunch boxes every day in front of gym. He purposely saved a box for Yang Yang, and he knew that she ofter starving and having financial problems.

Therefore, he started to make Love Lunch Box which contained excellent food made from tasty ingredients. Especially, he gave her these luxurous lunch boxes for free, which made Yang Yang feel touched and warm. However, she still noted all the prices of these boxes and insisted that she would pay back some day.

Through delivering lunch boxes, Tian Kuo had realized Yang Yang's life more clearly, and felt touched that she did her best to take care for her sister in every details. They became closer and cluser gradually but they had some conflict dut to some misunderstanding. Adding on Yang Yang thinking that she didn't pay enough attention to Siao Peng, so she decided to break up with Tian Kuo. How could Tian Kuo rebuild the relationship with her beloved lover........

All the audience may feel impressed because we found that Yang Yang was not deaf. In fact, the director had kept told us that most of us only saw the thing on the surface but not inside. Apparently, the leading male and female character are Tian Kuo and Yang Yang whom we paid most of our attention to. However, we could find this truth by looking at the interaction between these two sisters. The director wanted us to watch this film with eyes and realized it with our true heart.

Ji Jie Hao/ Assembly

Assembly(集結號) is a 2007 Chinese war drama film directed by Feng Xiaogang(馮小剛).
It is among the first Mainland-produce films to protray the Chinese Civil War in a realistic style. The movie is an adaptation of the novel "Guan Si"(官司)which is based on the real life account of a retired old soldier who engaged in upholding his company's honor.

The story begins in 1948 during the Huaihai Campaign of the Chinese Civil War (淮海戰役/國民黨稱為徐蚌會戰) with Gu Zidi (谷子地), a captain of the People's Liberation Army, fighting the KMT and winning the battle with severe casualties. After that, Gu's commanding officer, Colonel Liu (劉澤水團長), soon sent Gu and his 46 remaining men off on a new assignment; to defend to the last man with limited resources, and they couldn't retreat until he heard the bugle call for assembly with the regiment.

Just as the platoon fortifiled the position, the KMT army suddently attacked with various weapons and a large number of soldiers; the company fiercely fended off the army. Duty bound, Gu decided to stay which moves the remaining men to follow him and fight to the death. An undeternmined amount of time later, Gu was seen in an army hospital, the only apparent suvivor of the battle. Incredulously, he was treated as a prison of war for wearing a scavenged enemy uniform when he was found. No one can prove he was a soldier to fight against KMT.
Gu remained guilt-ridden over the next several year: he went on to fight in the Korean War and was wounded in the face during a sabotage mission bt a landmine to save another soldier Zhao Erdon(趙二斗).

With the help of Zhao Erdou, he found the old battlefield of Wen River (汶水).
Realizing he is now his company's only living witness, he camps out in a mining but near the old battlefield and started to dig at the huge coal pile daily with a pick and shovel, despite protests from the miners.A month into the ordeal, the old battalion's political offocer was found, and the men were finally honored through an offical notice.
Assembly has two part: the former one emphasizes the fierous battlefield while the later focused on the loneness of the heros. The director used the blood battlefield and sacrifice of the brave soldiers to emphasize the rediculous war. Soldiers held on their position but became unamed corpse in the end. What is the price of their sacrification?

August Rush

A famous and charming gitar player Louis and a beautiful celloist Laira, they met in a happy party. They quicly fell in love and had a one night stand accidently. However, the living background finally prevented them from being together.

After the separation, Laira found she was pregnant. Due to the high expectation from his father, he can't endure her daughter's behavior. After a serious argument, Laira had a serious car accident in a heavy rain. However, her father hid the infant secertly and sent it to a orphanage where the infant grew to the eleven years old.

Evan, a boy who had fantasy and enthusiasm to all the sound around him, like the sound of the wind, straw, birds and insects. All of the sound have been beautiful chapters in his clear mind. Although the officer of Walfare Affair wanted to find a parents for him, but he still believed that his parents would find him someday and they would be reunioned again. He left the orphanage and came to New York. However, his genius of music always attract the attention from other people.

Finally, after the tremendous struggles, he finally stood on the stage of the Central Park, attending the Spring Court. Thousands people stood there thereand heard his excellent performance will bring his parents to him in the end.

The movie successfully combined the classical music and the popular one.

We may think that there was too much luckness in this film. Music is certainly everywhere. The perserverance of the little boy make himself believe that his parents had not abandoned hin and still try to find him. Moreover, he believed the music will rebuild the connection between him and his parents.

The plot that I liked most is the little boy met his father but they didn't know each other, and their relationship. They only had the same interest and played the music happily. Maybe the parent-children relationship made them have the connection in their mind.

The end of this movie was pretty happy. The little boy accomplished all of his dream, because his beloved music helped him find back the love of them.
Music is all around us, what we have to do is listen.
Music can be so touchful, which brings the three connected their minds. Music can be so amazingly similiar. The little boy loved music more than any other else. Although he had grew up in an orphanage, he still believed that his parents will try to find him. Because when he heard the music playing in the city, although he couldn't see that , he kept waiting. Because once he the can be heard by each other, something amazing can be true. Instead of language, music van explain everything, and that is why the music can be so attractive.

The story contains a religious question by author Kenji Miyazawa . The main theme of the story is "what is true happiness?"

The definition of happiness can be various, large or small.
Getting good grades can be happiness.
Earning money by taking part-time job can be happiness.
Finding a beautiful thing and feeling touched can be happiness.
Chatting and eating with friends can be happiness.
Readind a touching story can be happiness.
Leading the hand of a girl walking in the campus can also be happiness.
Breathing air in the high mountains and seeing stars in the night heaven can be happiness.
Happiness is all around us, but the problem is that we can't hold it in time.
Letting it slipping through our fingers or ignoring any possible tiny happiness.
We don't grab tiny happiness, not realize touchingness but enlarge unpleased and sdafeeling in our daily life.
In brief, we sell our soul to a devel whose name is Sadness.
Even though we beg the pity from God by this name, he may not give any forgiving to us.

Therefore, we have to let ourselves feel happy.
But I don't want to occupy myself in the happiness, because it's not all my life.
Don't take good things or bad ones for granted, and embrace them together.

If it can be so, our life will be happier.
